About Horseland

Horseland is a fun game of imaginary horses. All the horses and money in the game are imaginary. The game is just for fun. Its a great opportunity to learn what it like to own real horses. To join Horseland, click the "Sign Up Now!!" button on Horseland's main page. This will bring you to a login page. You will then be asked to fill out a form where you will choose a login name and password. Children under age 13 can sign up as Junior players. Junior players cannot send or receive messages in the game for their protection: so they don't give out personal information.

Please read the login & password warning!

Remember, the best part of Horseland is playing with other people from around the world. Be nice and considerate of all the players in the game. Some people are young and have just started to play. Be nice to them and help them out. Other people have been playing for years. But always be polite and considerate of other players. We do not allow people to post rude or obnoxious messages to other people. If you see something bad or someone sends you a bad message, send a copy to help@horseland.com (make sure you enclose the other player's number). We can ban or block players that do not follow the rules.

Most of all have fun! It may seem a little complicated when you first get started, but don't worry, it is not that hard!

Pop-Up Ads

We are sorry you have been getting pop-up ads when you are logged into Horseland, but those ads are not coming from Horseland. Most likely you have some "spyware" software installed on your computer.  This software is often installed without people being aware of it when they install some other programs.  This "spyware" software pops up ads at various times.  You can remove this software by downloading and running some software to remove the spyware.  We recommend the following free tools:

Adaware from Lavasoft
You can download this software from www.download.com.

Go to that site and then download and install the software. You can search for "adaware" or try this link:http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10214379.html?tag=lst-4-2

Spybot
This software is also available from www.download.com

Deleting Accounts

After an account has not been logged into for one year the account is automatically deleted.

Accounts can not be deleted manually. You can find the passwords to your old accounts as long as you have the login names and you enter a correct email address when you sign-up. Go to Login or Password Problems. Enter your login name there and the password will be sent to you. Once you login to your old accounts they can be reset and reused. Each player may have as many as 5 accounts (Basic or Junior). There is no limit on the amount of Premium accounts a player can own.

Banning and Booting

Horseland staff and Moderators will ban players who swear, cyber, constantly harass, post bad pictures, sell accounts, flood, scam, steal, charge real money, impersonate Horseland staff, threaten people who enter their shows (Private Shows), log into banned accounts, or use scripts. We have players of all ages, we will ban anything that young children shouldn't have to come in contact with. We will also delete the descriptive information of any horse or player that we find inappropriate.

Also Horseland Moderators have the power to temporarily 'boot' players from the game for a number of offenses. The types of things that Mods may boot player for include, but are not limited to, harrassment, scamming, flooding the TALK boards, cybering, bad language, slander, impersonating Horseland Staff, etc. It it up to the Moderator to decide if he or she should boot, ban, or simply warn a player if they are doing something wrong. For more information on Moderators, please click here.

Game Play

Home

This is your "home-base" in Horseland. If you are a Junior Player you can see your Horseland (play)money, horses, tack, and a record of your activities. If you are a Basic Player you can also see your Stable Buddies. If you are a Premium Player you can see all that Basic Player can PLUS your arenas and Stable, shows you've set up, and information about your Training License.

Money

There are several different ways to get money on HorseLand.

For All Players
You may have up to 2 billion dollars in an account.

The first way to make money is to collect money once a week from the bank. To go to the bank, click on "Go to the Bank" on your Home page.
Make sure you go to the bank once a week to get your allowance. If you don't pick up your money one week, you will lose one week's allowance (that means you can only get a set amount every week). And how much can you get once a week? This depends on whether you are a Premium or Basic player. Basic and Junior players get $10,000 weekly while premium players get $200,000.

Another way to get money is by selling horses. Just like in real life, you can buy a horse at a low price, and after some showing, sell it again at a higher price.

For Premium Players
If you are a Premium Player, you can make money by hosting shows. Though it costs money to start a show, people have to pay an entry fee when they sign up for classes. So you can make money if enough people enter.

Also, Premium Players may purchase a Training License from the Store which they can use to train other players horses for a set price.

Finally, Premium Players can earn money by boarding other players' horses in their Stable.

Shows

Ready to show your horse?
Entering shows has never been easier!

To enter shows:
1. Choose the horse you want to enter in a show.
2. Go to that horses page.
3. Scroll down the page for the link 'Enter this horse in a show' and click on that link.
It will automatically send you to the Shows page that searches for shows shows that have not run yet.

Enter the specifications you want:
Name (the name of the show you're looking for)
Type(the type of show you're looking for)
Only shows scheduled in the last (choose how many) day(s).
Run date (mm/dd/yyyy means: if you're looking for a show that will run on March 14, 2004, enter 03/14/2004)
1. Check a box to use the new Shockwave or show FLASH show entry
2. Click Find
3. click on show in the bottom left-hand box
4. wait a second

This is the cool part!
(In the bottom right-hand box)
*Only the first class will come up. (If you want to see other classes press the purple arrows.)

1. Now, all you have to do is press the "Enter Class" button, and notice how the class will change from (1-class name to 2-class name)
*click only once, and when the "wait" button appears, please wait, you won't be able to click again until the "Enter Class" button re-appears
2. Continue clicking the "Enter Class" button until the button disappears and the message "Already Entered" is in it's place, and you're back to the first class.
--With this NEW Show system you spend less time scrolling, less time wondering if you're entering a class you already entered, and more time having fun Showing.

Once your horse has been entered in a class you have done all that you need to do. You do not have to be logged in when the show is run in order to have your horses win. You can check back on the show page to see the results once it has been run. Also, from your horse's page, can click "View Show Results" to see if your horse has placed. When a show is run if your horse places within the top 30 spots in a class, the results of that class will be listed on the "Horse Show Results" page for that horse. If your horse does not place in a class, nothing will be posted under Show Results. (All show results are deleted after four weeks).

*Some shows are worth more than normal point values. Watch for notes on the Shows page to tell you if you're looking at such a show.*

The shows are run automatically by the computer on the date set by the person who made the show and are judged randomly- you don't have to be signed in to Horseland when your show runs.

All shows are open to any player. Its against the rules to run shows for only some players or for yourself.

Points and Placement
The first place horse in each class and the horse's owner receive 32 points each, second place receive 31 points, third get 30 points and so forth, on down to 30th place, who get 3 points each. Horses and owners who achieve lower than 30th place get 2 points each just for participating.

Health and Showing
You will not be able to enter your horse into any shows if the horse's health is below 25%.

Additionally, as shows run, your horse gets tired and health drops slightly after each class. If, as shows are running, your horse's health drops below 25%, your horse will not be able to compete in any more classes. That means that they will not be able to place in the class and will not receive the 2 participation points.

Horses

You can buy your first horse from the Store by clicking on STORE in the menu. You can also buy horses from other players. Click HORSES in the menu and you can search for horses by entering different characteristics that you are looking for such as breed, type, age, etc.
Horses age one year of game time for each week of real time. Horses may be retired after 20 weeks, at which time they cannot breed or compete.

There are three kinds of horses:

· females which are called mares

· males which are called stallions (or studs if they are available for breeding)

· males which are called geldings that have been fixed so that they cannot breed

Horses have to be kept in a stable. If you don't have your own stable, your horses must stay in someone else's. This is called "boarding". You have to pay the stable owner money to keep your horse there. When you buy a new horse it is temporarily kept at the Store. The store will not feed your horse, so you must move it to a player run stable. To change where your horse is boarded, go to the horse's page and click on FIND A NEW PLACE TO BOARD.

Points

HorseLand's game runs on a point system. Both owners and horses receive points from Shows. The amount of points received is determined by the placement of the winners. The higher you place in a show, the more points you get. The first place horse in each class and the horse's owner receive 32 points each, second place receive 31 points, third get 30 points and so forth, on down to 30th place, who get 3 points each. Horses and owners who achieve lower than 30th place get 2 points each just for participating.
Also, horses may be trained by Players who have purchased a Training License. Each training session gives the horse 50 points.

Foal Points
Baby horseys can be born with points if their parents have points.
The computer uses a complicated (and secret) formula to determine foal points. It is based on the points of both parents.
Usually, the more points the parents have, the more point the Foal will have.
Foals have less points than their parents, because they don't have experience in shows yet.

Players

Store

The Store is an automatic program.  A computer runs it.
Sometimes our site calls the store: "Player #0"

At the Store you can buy feed, tack, arenas, and horses. If you are a Premium Player you can also buy a Training License. The money that you spend will be automatically deducted from your account. All transactions are, of course, in play money.

Store Items For Junior, Basic, & Premium Players:
Tack: Saddle, Bridal Set, Blanket, Saddle Pad.
Tack is for fun. In a future upgrade we will to make it more useful. When you buy tack at the store, then you can view it in your tack room, from your home page.
***View your tack in the stable area on your Home page. Click "View Tack room in Stable".***
Horses: choose from a variety of Mares, Stallions, and Geldings
***View your horses in your Horses area on your home page. View them individually by clicking on their name.***

Store Items For Premium Players Only:
**Some of these items can be bought by other players, but not used.
Feed:
A Large bag of feed contains 100 daily servings. You will use this to fee the horses housed at your stable.
***View how much feed you have in the table with your money and player points.***
Arena: This is where shows are held, and each premium player only needs one arena. Basic players cannot use Arenas or start shows.
***You can view your number of Arenas from your home page, next to your Player Points.
Training License: A Training License lasts for 30 days and contains 30 training tickets. You cannot buy another license until your current license has expired. The Training Fee is the fee you charge other people if you train their horse. (You can set fee to anything, but you will not be able to change it again until you buy a new License)
***View your training license information in the Training area under your Shows area***

Humane Association

If a horse's board fee is not paid for over 30 days, then the stable owners can send it to the Humane Association. The horse's owner will have one week to reclaim it. If the horse is not reclaimed within that time, it will be sold at a price determined by the Humane Association. To reclaim a horse, go to the Humane Association page (from the Clubs list page) and run a search for your horse. If you were the last owner, you will see a link, "Reclaim Horse", that you can click to get the horse back.

Home Page Descriptions

Decorating your Home Page

Basic Players and Premium Players can decorate their home pages. To customize your home page you have to enter some HTML and text in the description box for your home page and click the Save Changes button.

HTML is a special code that make words and graphics appear the way you want on the Web.

The first thing to try is to change the way some text appears:

To change the font size, type
<fontsize="3">
By changing the number, you will change the font size.

You must type
</font>
at the end of the text that you want to be the new size to end the new font.

To change the font color, type
<font color="green">
That will make the text following that statement green. You can play around with different color names. Again, don't forget to end the section of colored text with
</font>
To post a picture, you need to know the URL (internet address) of the picture.
Then type
<img src="http://www.myhomepage.com/horsepic.gif">

Of course, put the actual URL for the picture in instead of
http://www.myhomepage.com/horsepic.gif.

Hacking

Hacking and Stealing of Horses and Money

People call riding horses on the roadway "Hacking". But in Horseland people also call it hacking when some loses horses or money to people that they did not want their horses or money to go to. Unfortunately, we cannot return horses or money that have been "stolen" by other players. We have no way to determine who is the rightful owner. If you think someone is getting into your account, change your password right away (do that from the bottom of your home page). Remember to check to make sure none of your horses are listed as FOR SALE unless you really want them for sale. Also, never give your password out to anyone or have partners in an account. That is the main reason that people lose things. We also cannot help players in cases where they buy accounts from other players and do not get them or if the same account is sold to many people.

Horses

Changing your horse's picture

You can change the photo used for your horse any time you want. On your horse's page click "Click here to change horse's picture." You can choose from the pictures that we have supplied or you can upload a horse picture into Horseland computers. (You cannot link to pictures on other web sites. Why? Because too many problems were caused when Horseland users linked to pictures without permission).

You can personalize your pictures. You will need a program that can edit photos. You probably want to start off with a digital picture of one of your horses. You can get a digital picture in several ways: You can take a picture with a digital camera. Or you can use a film camera and when you get the pictures developed ask for a "Picture CD" with your film. They will put your pictures on a CD that you can load into your computer. You can also scan in your regular photographs using a scanner. Many people have scanners. (Maybe you can find one in your school).

You can buy a photo editing program or you can download a free one from web sites like http://www.download.com.
One free and easy to use program is ACDSee Classic

The new horse pages use Flash Media player to view the images. Make sure you have installed the latest version of Flash. You can download a free version online here:

PC users
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Mac users
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P2_Platform=MacOSX

Make sure you open a fresh browser window to test these fixes.

If you have tried both of these suggestions and you are still unable to view or upload horse images please send us a reply to this email along with:
Your account ID number
Your web browser type and version
Let us know if you are using Windows Vista or if you are on a Mac as well

Feeding and Boarding Horses

You can only feed your horses if you have them boarded at your own stable. This means that only Premium Players can feed their own horses. If your horses are boarded somewhere else, the player who owns the stable will feed them as long as you pay the boarding fee. If the stable owners are not feeding your horses, send them a note or move them to a new stable. To move your horse to a new stable, go to the horse's page and click on the "Find A Different Place To Board" link. If you do not pay your boarding fee the stable owner may send your horse to the Humane Association after 31 days.

If you own a stable, you must first buy feed at the Store. Then click on the "Add Feed" link next to each horse in your stable. You will add seven days worth of feed at a time and this feed will be subtracted from the Servings left in your feed bin. If a horse is not fed for four months it will die.

Breeding

Horses must be three years old to breed. Only mare owners can control the breeding. If you have a mare that you would like to breed, search for stallions that are available for stud by going to the Horses page and searching for stallions. When you find a stallion you like, you can click on the link called "Breed one of your mares with this stallion". You will then get a page that lets you pick which one of your mares to breed with this stallion.

Training

It is not necessary to train horses, but training gives your horses some more points. To find a trainer go to the bottom of your horse's page and click on "Find Trainer". Then pick a trainer. The trainer may or may not get around to training your horse that month. If your horse is not trained that month, you will have to apply again the next month. You can see what training requests you have made by clicking on the link from your HOME page.

Branding

Brandings on Horseland are similar to a Branding in real life.
A branding is a marking that a stable owner puts on her horses to show ownership.
You may make up your own group of letters or numbers etc for your own Brand so that other players know the horse came from your account.
Brandings can be made permanent on each horse's page as well.

Selling Horses to Friends

Hint on selling horses to friends: If you want to sell a horse to a friend, don't just put "This horse is for Mary ONLY!!" this is not safe. And we can't get the horse back for you if someone other than Mary buys it. Set the selling price for the horse as high as possible then have your friend bid at a reasonable price. You can then accept your friend's bid. This is the same way you can transfer your own horses between your accounts safely.

Player Types

The difference between Junior, Basic and Premium Players

There are three types of players on the HorseLand game: Basic Players, Junior Players, and Premium Players. Everyone starts out as a Basic Player.

Basic Players can own horses and tack. They can breed their horses, enter them in shows and have them trained by trainers. Basic Players cannot own stables, so they must board their horses at someone else's boarding stable. A basic player can collect $10,000 of play money per week from the bank. You can play as a free basic player for as long as you want!

Junior Players are the same as Basic Players except they cannot send or receive messages or decorate their home page. (We do this to help protect them from disclosing personal information). Junior Players can learn how to upgrade to Basic play for free by clicking on Upgrade Info at the top of any page in the game.

Premium Players can own stables, become trainers, and start and run shows. Premium Players can become presidents of clubs and chat in premium talk rooms. Premium players collect $200,000 of play money each week (and a bonus of $500,000 play money when they first upgrade to premium status).

How to become a Premium Player

The cost to become a Premium Player is $29.90 per year (this is real money). There are two options for upgrading to a Premium Player: check or credit card. To upgrade to Premium Player status first go to Upgrade Information (a link which is found at the top right of all game pages).

If you wish to upgrade by check, click on "Mail a Check." Print out the form provided to you, and send it in with a check or US money order (no cash please). If you choose to upgrade by credit card, click on the PayPal button under "Credit Card Upgrades."

Kids, ask your parents for help. Before upgrading, you should read the Terms of Service which are located on the Upgrade Information page.
